Frequently Asked Questions
How do we work together?
When you first contact NatureMaker to create a tree for your project, you - or your architect - may already have a basic idea of what you'd like. We ask about the architecture and use of your space, your schedule, and your budget. Our expert design team then suggests the size and type of trees that meet your requirements. Often, we'll meet with you to present bark and foliage samples, along with scale drawings of the project. We start handcrafting your tree only after you sign off on the design. With 25 years of experience, we guarantee that your tree will look like it has grown from the ground up.
What inspired such a unique art form?
We all watch as urban and suburban sprawl encroaches on living space for trees. NatureMaker trees are one way to preserve "what is" for future generations, ensuring that the children of the 21st and 22nd centuries know the majestic oaks, sequoias, and evergreen trees that we now enjoy. Drought, bug infestation, climatic changes, logging, population growth, and industrialization continue to destroy habitats for trees, birds and animals at an alarming rate. NatureMaker's works for schools, libraries, museums, nature centers - even for hotels and shopping centers - are one way to educate and remind the public both of the dangers of environmental imbalance, and of the innate pleasure we all derive from being in touch with nature.
What should a museum designer do to incorporate interactivity into a tree design?
First, develop your master plan, specifying the interactive or multimedia components to be incorporated into the exhibit. Then our design team will work with you to establish the overall configuration of a tree that accommodates your plan. NatureMaker has three decades of experience integrating lighting, murals, touch screens, animatronics and more for a wide range of applications.
How do you install a tree without removing the roof?
Our trees are engineered and handcrafted as a series of interlocking components. The trees are shipped in numbered, color-coded sections. We then assemble each tree on-site and lock the parts in place. NatureMaker's artists blend and detail the connections with the proprietary bark for a seamless design. The tree appears to be an integral part of the building, as if it had always been there.
Can you design a "kid-friendly" and "kid-proof" tree?
Educating children about the wonder, beauty, and fragility of nature is one of the best things we can do to ensure a healthier environment. However, our trees have to be resilient as well. NatureMaker has developed a bark texture that not only invites the experience of touch, but also is durable enough to withstand thousands of tiny hands. The bark resists markers, scratching and gouging. We can design trees limbs too high to tempt children into jumping or climbing, or construct trunks smooth enough for bare knees to crawl through. High tech engineering and structural supports ensure that trees won't tip over.
How much does a NatureMaker tree weigh?
You don't need a castle floor for our trees, but some structural support is generally required. It's best to consult us before designing your home. Our engineering department will calculate the weight of the steel frame and finished tree so your contractor can plan accordingly. NatureMaker trees can even be installed on upper stories with adequate floor support. We are happy to help you select the right type of tree, weight, and canopy size for your new or existing space.
How do you clean a NatureMaker tree?
In nature, trees are washed by rain and dried by wind. So how do you clean a NatureMaker tree? For commercial installations, a portable air compressor with 50 feet of hose and a dusting tip will work fine. Always dust trees from the top down. Don't use water or harsh chemicals, as these could damage the bark. The trees may also be cleaned using a topical cleaner. Please call NatureMaker at 1.800.872.1889 or email us for more cleaning recommendations or touch up paint for minor repairs.
