Tree of Hope
A recently opened exhibit at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis showcases a walk-through chestnut tree at the entrance. The hand-sculpted, ancient weathered trunk, equipped with computers and monitors, includes two large lighted openings. Aptly named the "Tree of Hope," the tree is an integral part of the educational and exploratory environment. Students leave personal messages at the tree with their pledges to build a better world. We have included the teachers letter and the students pledges below:
"Hello. My name is Andrea. I am a student teacher at UPUI. I am student teaching at Winchester Village Elementary School in Perry Township in 3rd Grade. My co-teaching partner, Jibrea, and I attended the Educator*s Night last week about the exhibit 'The Power of Children.' We wanted our students to learn what we learned while at the Children's Museum. The next morning, we talked about each child with our students. None of our students knew who the children were so we talked about each child and the difference they made. We started thinking how we could make a difference. We came up with making our own 'Tree of Promise.' On each leaf is one of our students promises that they made. We just thought you would like to hear how your Educator's Night has made an impact on a 3rd grade classroom. Also listed below are the promises written on the leaves of each our students and ourselves. Thank you for your time."
Sincerely, Andrea and Jibrea
